Slow January
Take the time to figure out what's working for you
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break. It has been a slow start to the year for me while simultaneously a busy one. I love that January gives you the freedom to be slow and really sit with what you hope for the year ahead. I love what my friend, Mia Rigden of Btwn Meals suggests. She advises doing a month of you. All the self care things you love to do but to the extreme. Really making space for YOU in January.
I do think getting dressed is a form of self care. What you put on your body is a mood boost! Cleaning out your closet makes you feel so good!
One of my most popular services in January is a closet clean out. January is a great time to do a deep dive and really go through your wardrobe and get rid of things that are outdated, worn out, or a piece you never wear. I love that a closet clean out allows you to get rid of the noise and have what you love and really wear at the forefront.
My tips for cleaning out your closet are this:
Go through everything by category: tops, sweaters, jeans, dresses etc..
Anything that is super outdated or worn out toss.
I highly suggest trying on most of your clothes to make sure you like the fit and it still works for you.
Anything you have been holding on to and haven’t worn, I suggest trying to create at least three looks with it. If you can’t create any looks with that piece get rid of it because chances are it will just continue to sit in your closet for years.
I promise at the end of the clean out you will feel lighter and be able to see the clothes you really want to wear!
My second most popular service in January that clients book is a styling session with what you already own. January is a great time to pause and really take stock of what you have before you make any new purchases. It’s so easy to constantly want more and new things, as we are constantly being marketed things and seeing influencers and celebrities on instagram wearing something new all the time.
I strongly encourage you to shop your own closet. Find some inspiration images of people’s style you like and outfits you want to recreate. Save screen shots on your phone or make a Pinterest board. Next take some time to play with your clothes and have a fitting with yourself.
If you own a rolling rack set it up and pull clothes out from your closet you want to style looks with. Be sure to take pictures of every outfit you put together so you can remember and reference when you don’t know what to wear. Having a fitting with yourself is such a good reminder of all the amazing things you have and maybe some pieces you forgot about. You will realize you most likely don’t need anything and if you do this exercise allows you to see the holes in your wardrobe.
Happy slow January!
